RDR2 Case Study
Red Dead Redemption 2
I grew up playing video games so it is no surprise that my love for them carried into adulthood. Red Dead Redemption 2 is an open world game released in 2018 by developers Rockstar Games. The game follows the story of Arthur Morgan and the gang of outlaws he is a part of, as they traverse a changing world. It takes place in 1899 in America and takes a look at the battle between being good or evil and how those choices affect Arthur throughout the game. It is one of my favorite games and I have poured hours into playing it. I have completed it twice and during my second time playing, I felt as I had to honor one of my favorite games with a design project. My ideas grew and soon branched out into three different projects, a book, an infographic, and a deck of poker cards.
The first project I designed was an infographic showing how much I played the game during the summer. The color pallet comes from the game, along with the typeface. I chose to have a PlayStation controller as the base of the infographic since that is my console of choice. I wanted the infographic to feel modern and clean to contrast the 1800’s aesthetic of the game.

Poker Card Deck
Poker is one of the games available to play in RDR2 and occurs as a mandatory part of a couple missions. I wanted the cards to feel modern but still have a bit of a 1800’s aesthetic. The character artwork is referenced from Rockstar’s official Red Dead Redemption 2 artwork and the rest were illustrated by me. The illustrations on the joker cards relate to different elements of the game. The deer and the wolf represent the honor system in the game and the two hats belong to the two main characters.

The book contains information all about the game. It has information on the characters, locations, challenges, and many other things. This book also documents my second play through of the game and logs all of my own personal gameplay data. All of the photos were taken by me using the PS4’s screenshot feature and the game’s photomode. Most of the descriptions come directly from the game or the Rockstar Red Dead Redemption 2 website.
